The top three cloud providers are still at odds. Amazon is still the leader, with Microsoft close behind. Google may be trailing behind, but it isn’t out of the race.
It’s no longer a question of whether or not to use cloud technology. It’s now about which one. Each cloud offers different benefits to different users. We will explore the reasons these platforms are so popular with certain groups.
AWS vs. Azure vs. Google: Market Share
AWS. AWS. Since its inception in 2004, AWS has been the dominant cloud provider by market share. 2018 was no exception. According to Amazon’s quarterly sales results for 2018, AWS had $25.7 billion in revenue, the highest of all cloud providers. It also saw a 47% annual increase.
This is not surprising, considering AWS had a seven year lead before Google and Microsoft entered the public cloud space. AWS services are the most advanced.

Start trainingAzure. Microsoft reported $23.2 billion in cloud revenue in their 2018 annual report. This value is a combination of multiple cloud properties, including Azure. This number is misleading though. It may appear that Azure is close to surpassing AWS in revenue. However, Azure’s revenue is bundled in Office 365 on its 10-K financial reports, so this may not be true.
Analysts put the actual Azure revenue at $13.5 billion in 2018, an amazing 82% annual growth. Azure still trails AWS in market share, however, at 13.7%. Despite this huge difference, Azure still holds the second spot for cloud providers with the highest market share.
GCP. Google has not yet reported its cloud revenue for 2018, but Canalys estimates that Google’s cloud revenue is $6.8 billion. This represents an annual growth rate of 94%. This secures Google’s third highest market share.
AWS vs. Azure vs. Google: Pricing Comparison
It seems that cloud providers offer the same thing, a cloud platform and services. Although that may be true to a certain extent, it is not as universal as it appears.
If you focus only on compute services for AWS, Azure and GCP, pricing is simple.
Computing General – Pay as You GoVendorvCPUMemoryCostAWS – a1.large24 GIB$0.05Azure – Fsv224 GIB$0.09GCP27.5 GIB$0.05However, it gets more complicated. There are many computing types that you can choose from, each with its own pricing and uses. AWS allows you to choose from more than 150 instances types and 10 operating systems. Azure has similar numbers. Pricing can get complicated when you add in the variety of storage options and the possibility for multiyear discounts.

Winner: It’s up you
It’s difficult to compare costs for each provider because of all the differences. Sometimes it can feel like comparing apples and oranges. It’s not the same as comparing apples to shoes in other cases. AWS, Azure and GCP offer calculators that can be used to estimate monthly costs for each of the three.
AWS vs. Azure vs. Google: Feature Comparison
AWS, Azure, Google all have similar high-level features. All three have compute, storage, as well as other services. The third category offers the most potential for differentiation. Hosting a website or an app is easy if you only need it. Many people choose their cloud provider to provide specialized services like machine learning or analytics.
Here’s a quick overview of the features offered by the three cloud providers.
AWS. AWS is the Swiss Army Knife of cloud providers. AWS has everything you could need and more. Its greatest strength, the abundance of services, is also its greatest flaw. AWS offers many new services that can be difficult for some users.
